CCSA Statement Re: Connecticut Lawmakers Passing Legislation to Create Community Solar Program

Washington, D.C. – On May 8, the Connecticut Legislature approved Senate Bill 9, legislation intended to create a community solar program. Coalition for Community Solar Access (CCSA) Executive Director Jeff Cramer today issued the following statement in response to the news:

“This bill represents a small, modest step forward for community solar in Connecticut, but leaves the state far behind its neighbors in expanding customer access to clean, local, and affordable solar. Going forward, there are several aspects of the program that need to be addressed and improved to create equity, ensure customers’ ability to choose solar, and foster community solar investments in the state. In particular, CCSA looks forward to working with the Department of Energy & Environment (DEEP) and Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) to ensure the program isn’t overly burdensome to customers wishing to participate. The community solar industry looks forward to continuing to work with all stakeholders over the coming year to build on this pilot program with the goal of establishing a truly robust program that meaningfully expands access to solar across the state.”

About CCSA:

The Coalition for Community Solar Access (CCSA) is a national Coalition of businesses and non-profits working to expand customer choice and access to solar to all American households and businesses through community solar. Community solar refers to local solar facilities shared by multiple community subscribers who receive credits on their electricity bills for their share of the power produced.  Community solar provides homeowners, renters, and businesses equal access to the economic and environmental benefits of solar energy generation regardless of the physical attributes or ownership of their home or business.  Community solar expands access to solar for all, including low-to-moderate income customers, all while building a stronger, distributed, and more resilient electric grid.  For more information, visit our website at www.communitysolaraccess.org, follow us on Twitter at @solaraccess and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/communitysolaraccess.
