New ad campaign responds to Proposed Decision on community solar at the CPUC

Ads call for ‘affordable, reliable, equitable’ community solar-plus-storage

Sacramento, CA – A new digital ad campaign calling on state officials to reject the proposed decision on community solar at the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and instead adopt the widely-supported Net Value Billing Tariff (NVBT) launched today.

Despite the broad and diverse support for a market-tested community solar-plus-storage program in California, the CPUC’s Administrative Law Judge sided with utilities, seemingly repeating the pattern of over a decade of failed efforts at creating a successful community solar program.

“State officials must reject the flawed decision and back the widely-supported Net Value Billing Tariff proposal that will keep the lights on in California, advance environmental justice, and lower energy bills for all ratepayers, most significantly for low-income customers,” said Derek Chernow, Western Regional Director, Coalition for Community Solar Access. “If the proposed decision is adopted, the community solar industry and billions of dollars in private capital will choose to build anywhere but California.”

The coalition supporting an affordable, reliable, and equitable community solar-plus-storage program in California includes ratepayer advocates, environmental justice groups, community solar developers, homebuilders, and green groups.

“A community solar-plus-storage program in California would provide significant energy bill savings with no cost-shift to people who don’t participate,” said Brandon Smithwood, Vice President of Policy, Dimension Renewable Energy. “California should be a clean energy leader, not drag the U.S. backwards by creating another failed program that perpetuates reliance on dirty fossil fuels.”
