Statements from the Community Solar Industry on the Launch of Maryland’s Community Solar Pilot Program

The Coalition for Community Solar Access and Key Members Applaud the PSC Order Allowing New Energy Options for Marylanders

Washington, DC (February 15, 2017) – The Coalition for Community Solar Access (CCSA) today released the following statements in response to an order from the Maryland Public Service Commission implementing the state’s innovative new community solar pilot program. Since June of 2016, CCSA has been participating in the collaborative working group process that led to today’s decision, which will enable nearly 200 megawatts of community solar development in the state over the next three years. Included below are statements from CCSA Executive Director Jeff Cramer and CCSA member companies 3Degrees and CleanChoice Energy.

Jeff Cramer, Executive Director, CCSA

“The Maryland Public Service Commission, staff and a wide array of stakeholders have devoted tremendous effort to working through the details to ensure a smooth rollout of this community solar pilot program. We appreciate their time and collaboration to seek consensus on a number of important issues.

“CCSA industry members are ready to get to work building projects and expanding access to solar for all in Maryland. With today’s Commission decision, we believe Maryland is now positioned to become one of the top five community solar markets in the nation.

“Community solar provides an important opportunity for residents and businesses who are not in a position to install solar panels onsite to do so through a collective option. Today’s decision means thousands of homeowners, renters, schools and businesses in Maryland are now able to go solar and save money on their energy bills.”

Adam Capage, Vice President of Community Solar, 3Degrees

“Every day we hear from customers around the country that are interested in community solar. Now, Marylanders will have the opportunity to support local community solar and we look forward to helping make that possible.”

Tom Matzzie, Founder and CEO, CleanChoice Energy

“Maryland’s new community solar program offers a big opportunity to expand the solar market, bringing clean energy, jobs and solar savings to Maryland residents. More solar means cleaner air, healthier lungs, a greener world. We’re very excited to do business in Maryland.”

About the Coalition for Community Solar Access (CCSA)

Founded in February 2016, CCSA is a business-led trade organization that works to expand access to clean, local, affordable energy nationwide through community solar. Community solar refers to local solar facilities shared by individual community members, who receive credits on their electricity bills for their portion of the power produced. Community solar projects provide American homeowners, renters and businesses access to the benefits of solar energy generation unconstrained by the physical attributes of their home or business, like roof space, shading, or whether or not they own their residence or building. These programs can also expand access to solar energy to low-income households.
